Title: Profiteering from Religion, a Sin.
Scripture Foundation
- Matthew 21:12–13 – “Jesus entered the temple courts and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves. ‘It is written,’ he said to them, ‘My house will be called a house of prayer,’ but you are making it ‘a den of robbers.’”
- 1 Timothy 6:5 – “…men of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the truth and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain.”
- Acts 8:20 – “Peter answered: ‘May your money perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money!’”
Reflection
The Word of God makes it clear that faith is not a commodity to be traded for profit. When religion is exploited for personal gain, it distorts the sacred purpose of worship and dishonors God. Jesus Himself showed righteous anger when the temple was turned into a marketplace, reminding us that His house is meant for prayer, not profiteering.
Paul warns Timothy against those who see godliness as a means of financial gain, exposing the danger of corrupt motives. The gifts of God are priceless, freely given through grace, and cannot be bought or sold. To profit from religion is to misrepresent the gospel, turning what is holy into merchandise.
Application
- Let us examine our hearts and motives in serving God.
- Are we seeking His kingdom first, or are we using His name for selfish gain?
- True worship is marked by humility, generosity, and sincerity—not exploitation.
Prayer
Lord, purify our hearts from greed and selfish ambition. May we serve You with integrity, honoring Your name and Your house. Keep us from turning faith into profit, and help us to treasure Your presence above all earthly gain. Amen.
