Title: A Fish Out of Water!
Scripture
"Return, faithless Israel, declares the Lord. I will not look on you in anger, for I am merciful, declares the Lord; I will not be angry forever." — Jeremiah 3:12
Reflection: A fish is designed for the water. Its gills, fins, and body are perfectly suited to thrive in rivers, lakes, and oceans. But once removed from its natural environment, it begins to gasp, flail, and weaken. Out of water, the fish cannot survive.
In the same way, a Christian is designed to live in the presence of God. Our spiritual “oxygen” is prayer, worship, fellowship, and obedience to His Word. When we backslide—when we drift away from God’s presence and return to old habits—we are like a fish out of water. At first, we may still move, still appear alive, but inside we are suffocating. The joy of salvation fades, peace slips away, and our spiritual strength weakens.
Warning
Remember, the devil is cunning. “For Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light” (2 Corinthians 11:14). He paints evil things in bright colors, presenting sin as something permissible, harmless, or even attractive. He whispers that we can always repent later, when we get home—but what if the person never makes it back home?
Backsliding doesn’t always happen suddenly. Sometimes it’s a slow drift—skipping prayer here, neglecting Scripture there, compromising in small ways until we find ourselves far from the Living Water. Like a fish that unknowingly swims toward the shore, we risk being stranded.
The Word warns us: “Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8). Truly, the devil is a beast waiting for souls to stumble.
Jesus Himself cautioned: “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many” (Matthew 7:13). The highway to hell is broad, and many are deceived into walking it.
That is why we must always be vigilant, lest we drift away from the Living Water. A Christian outside of Christ’s presence is like a fish out of water—gasping, suffocating, and unable to survive. “Take heed, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God” (Hebrews 3:12).
May we never suffocate spiritually. May the Lord keep us immersed in His grace, sustained by His Spirit, and anchored in His Word. “Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of His glory with great joy” (Jude 1:24).
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, keep me watchful and steadfast. Do not let me be deceived by the devil’s tricks or lured by the broad way of destruction. Keep me in Your presence, where life and joy abound. If I stumble, draw me back quickly. Restore my joy, renew my strength, and let me swim freely in the ocean of Your grace. May I never suffocate outside of Your Living Water. Amen.
Hope
But here is the good news: God never abandons His children. Just as a fisherman might scoop up a struggling fish and return it to the water, the Lord longs to restore us. His mercy is deeper than the ocean, and His grace flows like a mighty river. If we repent and turn back, He breathes life into us again.
Takeaway
A fish cannot survive out of water, and a Christian cannot thrive outside of Christ. Stay immersed in His Word, His Spirit, and His fellowship. That is where life is found.
