Title: The Water Lily Christian.
Key Text: “That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive.” — Ephesians 4:14 (KJV)
The Water Lily Analogy: A water lily is a beautiful plant, but it is unstable. Its roots do not go deep into the soil, so the slightest push from the waves makes it sway back and forth. In the same way, an uncommitted Christian who lacks deep knowledge of God’s Word is easily swayed by every new teaching, trend, or voice that comes along.
The Danger of Shallow Roots: Jesus warned about this in the parable of the sower: “But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it; yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended.” — Matthew 13:20–21
Without strong roots in Scripture, believers are vulnerable to deception, especially in today’s age of social media where false teachings spread rapidly. Some preachers, though zealous, lack grounding in the Word and can mislead many with eloquence rather than truth.
Testing Every Spirit: The Bible gives us a clear safeguard: “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.” — 1 John 4:1
This means we must measure every teaching against the Word of God. If something is unclear, we should seek guidance from Scripture and from elders who are firmly rooted in truth.
Rooted in the Word: Paul reminds us: “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” — Colossians 3:16
When we are grounded in the Word, we will not be tossed about like water lilies. Instead, we will stand firm, able to discern truth from error, and grow in faith.
A Call to Depth: It is better to attend a Bible-teaching church than one that focuses only on miracles. Miracles are real, but they flow from faith that is rooted in God’s Word. “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” — Romans 10:17
When you understand Scripture, you can pray with confidence and see God’s power at work in your life—even in your own home.
Prayer: Lord, help me to be deeply rooted in Your Word. Guard my heart against deception and give me discernment to test every spirit. May I grow in faith and stand firm, unshaken by the waves of false teaching. Amen.
I therefore urge you this day, to examine your position and if not well rooted in the Word of God, to start reading the Bible and attend Bible classes. Testimony awaits you. Please share this with your contacts. ©Dr Joel Olanrewaju, gbemide09@gmail.com.
