Title: Walking by the spirit.
So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. Galatians 5:16 NIV
Devotion: Galatians 5:16, in the New International Version (NIV), is a powerful reminder of the spiritual journey that Christians are called to undertake. The verse states: "So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh."
This verse highlights the importance of living a life that is guided by the Holy Spirit. The "Spirit" refers to the Holy Spirit, which dwells within believers and guides them towards righteousness and away from sinful desires. The "desires of the flesh" refer to the sinful inclinations and temptations that can lead one astray from God's will.
In essence, Galatians 5:16 is a call to live a life that is in alignment with the Holy Spirit. By doing so, believers can resist the temptations of the flesh and live a life that is pleasing to God.
This message is further echoed in other Bible verses. For instance, Romans 8:5-6 (NIV) says: "Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace."
Additionally, Galatians 5:22-23 (NIV) outlines the "fruit of the Spirit," which are the qualities and virtues that are produced in the life of someone who is walking by the Spirit. These verses say: "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law."
By walking by the Spirit, believers are empowered to exhibit these positive qualities and live a life that reflects the character of Christ. This transformative process enables them to overcome the desires of the flesh and align their lives with God's will.
In summary, Galatians 5:16 calls believers to walk by the Spirit, thus enabling them to resist sinful desires and live a life that is marked by the fruit of the Spirit. This path leads to a deeper, more fulfilling relationship with God and a life that is characterized by spiritual growth and righteousness.
