Title: Beware of Envying and Strife.
Scripture focus:
“But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth. For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.”James 3:14,16 KJV
Devotion: These words cut deep. Envying and strife are not merely external conflicts—they begin as bitter roots in the heart. When we harbour .jealousy over another’s gifts, success, or position, and allow rivalry to grow, we open the door to disorder. Scripture is clear: where these thrive, confusion follows, and every kind of evil work finds fertile ground.
This is not a new warning. Paul lists envy and strife among the works of the flesh that war against the Spirit (Galatians 5:19–21). He also urges the church at Philippi, “Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves” (Philippians 2:3). And James himself goes on to describe the better way: “But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace” (James 3:17–18).
Envying and strife promise nothing but unrest. They fracture relationships, cloud judgment, and grieve the Holy Spirit. Yet the gospel offers a different path. Christ, who could have claimed every right and privilege, chose humility and service. When we look to Him, the bitter root loses its power. We learn to rejoice with those who rejoice, to seek the good of others, and to pursue the peace that only God can give.
Reflection: Where has envy or rivalry taken root in your heart lately? Bring it honestly before the Lord. Ask Him to replace it with His peaceable wisdom and the quiet strength that comes from esteeming others above yourself.
Prayer: Father, search my heart. Uproot every bitter envy and every spirit of strife. Fill me instead with the pure, peaceable wisdom that comes from above, that I may sow righteousness in peace and walk in the truth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
