Tithe: Sustainable Health for the Nigerian Christian: A Biblical Teaching.

 Introduction: What Is Sustainable Health?

Sustainable health refers to a lifestyle that maintains physical, mental, and spiritual well-being over time. For the Nigerian Christian, this means living in a way that honors God, nurtures the body, and uplifts the community—despite economic, environmental, or social challenges.

> “Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.” — 3 John 1:2

1. Spiritual Health: The Foundation of Wholeness

 Faith and Obedience

Spiritual health begins with a relationship with God. In Nigeria, where faith is deeply woven into daily life, spiritual discipline is key.

- Proverbs 3:7-8 — “Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones.”

- Daniel’s Example: Daniel refused to defile himself with the king’s food (Daniel 1:8). His obedience led to better health than those who indulged in luxury (Daniel 1:15).

 Prayer and Peace

Stress and anxiety are enemies of health. Prayer brings peace that sustains mental and emotional well-being.

- Philippians 4:6-7 — “Do not be anxious about anything... And the peace of God... will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

 2. Physical Health: Stewardship of the Body

 Nutrition and Moderation

In many Nigerian homes, food is central to culture. But Scripture teaches moderation and wisdom.

- 1 Corinthians 10:31 — “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”

- Daniel’s Diet: A plant-based diet led to vitality and wisdom (Daniel 1:12–16). This encourages us to consider healthier, locally available options like vegetables, grains, and fruits.

 Rest and Renewal

Many Nigerians work tirelessly, but rest is biblical.

- Exodus 20:10 — “But the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work…”

- Jesus Himself rested and encouraged His disciples to do the same (Mark 6:31).

🏃 3. Mental and Emotional Health: Guarding the Mind

 Renewing the Mind

Mental health is often overlooked, yet Scripture emphasizes its importance.

- Romans 12:2 — “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

- Elijah’s Depression: After great victories, Elijah felt overwhelmed and asked God to take his life (1 Kings 19). God responded with rest, food, and gentle encouragement—showing divine care for emotional health.

  Community and Support

Isolation can harm mental health. The church and family are vital support systems.

- Galatians 6:2 — “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”

 4. Environmental and Social Health: Living Responsibly

 Clean Living and Sanitation

Biblical laws emphasized hygiene long before modern science.

- Deuteronomy 23:12-13 — Instructions on sanitation reflect God’s concern for public health.

- In Nigeria, promoting clean water, waste management, and hygiene aligns with biblical stewardship.

 Justice and Equity

Health is also affected by social structures. Christians are called to advocate for fairness.

- Isaiah 1:17 — “Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed…”

 5. Holistic Healing: Jesus as the Model

Jesus healed physically, emotionally, and spiritually. His ministry was a blueprint for sustainable health.

- Luke 8:43–48 — The woman with the issue of blood was healed not just physically, but emotionally and socially.

- John 5:6 — Jesus asked, “Do you want to be made well?”—a question that invites us to take responsibility for our health.

Conclusion: Living a Life of Wholeness

Sustainable health is not just about avoiding illness—it’s about living in alignment with God’s design. For Nigerian Christians, this means:

- Honoring God with your body

- Practicing discipline and rest

- Supporting one another in community

- Advocating for justice and clean environments
