Title: Favor.

Key Verse:
"Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favour of the LORD." — Proverbs 18:22

Devotion: Marriage is not merely a social contract; it is a divine covenant instituted by God. The Scripture makes it clear that the man who finds a wife receives favor from the Lord. Notice it says wife, not just woman. This distinction reminds us that not every woman is prepared or called to be a wife, and not every man is prepared to be a husband. The responsibility lies with the man to seek God’s guidance in choosing, for only God knows the heart.
1. Favor in Marriage
Marriage is a gift of favor. When God brought Eve to Adam, Adam exclaimed:
"This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man." — Genesis 2:23
Here, Adam did not search blindly; God Himself orchestrated the union. This shows that true favor in marriage comes when God is the matchmaker. Such unions are marked by peace, prosperity, and strength, not division or strife.
2. Not Everyone is Called to Marriage
Jesus Himself acknowledged that marriage is not for everyone:
"For there are eunuchs, which were so born from their mother's womb: and there are eunuchs, which were made eunuchs of men: and there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven's sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it." — Matthew 19:12
This means that some are called to celibacy or singleness for the sake of God’s kingdom. Marriage is a blessing, but it is not the only path to favor.
3. Favor Brings Stability
When God grants favor through marriage, it is not meant to end in divorce. Malachi 2:16 reminds us:
"For the LORD, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting away..."
God’s favor in marriage strengthens the bond, brings fruitfulness, and establishes a legacy of peace and prosperity. Think of Abraham and Sarah: though they faced challenges, their union carried the promise of nations and blessings.
4. Biblical Examples of Favor in Marriage
- Isaac and Rebekah (Genesis 24): Abraham’s servant prayed for God’s guidance, and God led him directly to Rebekah. This shows that prayer and divine direction are essential in finding a wife.
- Ruth and Boaz (Ruth 4): Ruth’s faithfulness and Boaz’s integrity led to a marriage that became part of the lineage of Christ. This was divine favor at work.
- Mary and Joseph (Matthew 1:18–25): Though their union faced unusual circumstances, God’s favor preserved their marriage and entrusted them with raising Jesus.
Reflection
Marriage is not a casual decision; it is a covenant that requires God’s guidance. The favor of marriage is not about wealth or status but about divine alignment, peace, and fruitfulness. If you are seeking marriage, seek God first. He alone knows the right partner who will bring favor into your life.
Prayer
Lord, I thank You for the gift of marriage and the favor it brings. Guide me to walk in Your will, whether in marriage or singleness. For those seeking a spouse, grant them wisdom and divine direction, that their union may reflect Your glory. Amen.
