Title: Finding Wisdom.

James 1:5  If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

Defining Wisdom, Knowledge, and Understanding
- Knowledge: This is the accumulation of facts, information, and truths. It’s what you know — the raw data of life. For example, knowing that fire burns is knowledge.
- Understanding: This goes deeper — it is the ability to interpret knowledge correctly, to see the meaning behind the facts. Understanding explains why fire burns and how it works.
- Wisdom: Wisdom is the right application of knowledge and understanding. It is not just knowing or explaining, but living rightly in light of truth. Wisdom says, “Since fire burns, I will not put my hand in it.”
The three words are interconnected as follows:
- Knowledge is the foundation.
- Understanding is the framework that organizes knowledge.
- Wisdom is the fruit — the practical outworking of both.
Without knowledge, there is nothing to understand. Without understanding, wisdom cannot be applied correctly. Yet wisdom is the highest because it governs action.
Success on Earth vs. Heaven:
- On earth, knowledge and understanding can bring success — in careers, relationships, and innovation. But wisdom ensures that success is sustainable, moral, and beneficial.
- In heaven, wisdom is supreme. Earthly knowledge will fade, but wisdom — rooted in God’s truth — endures eternally. Scripture says, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom” (Proverbs 9:10).
Source of Wisdom: God is the source of wisdom, James 1:5 reminds us: “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.”
Wisdom is not earned by intellect alone; it is a divine gift. God Himself is the fountain of wisdom, and He delights to give it to those who humbly ask.
Counsel for a Righteous Life Full of God’s Wisdom:
- Seek God daily: Through prayer and Scripture, invite His guidance.
- Practice humility: Recognize that human wisdom is limited; God’s wisdom is infinite.
- Obey His Word: Wisdom is proven in righteous living, not just in clever thoughts.
- Walk in love: True wisdom is gentle, peaceable, and full of mercy (James 3:17).
- Ask continually: Wisdom is not a one-time gift but a daily supply from God.
Final Thought: Knowledge fills the mind, understanding shapes the heart, but wisdom directs the hands and feet. To live wisely is to live righteously, guided by God’s Spirit, shining His light both on earth and in eternity.
