Title: Be Content with What You Have.
Text: Hebrews 13:5 (KJV)
"Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee."
As children of God, we are called to live lives free from covetousness and to be satisfied with the blessings God has given us. Contentment is a sign of trust in God's wisdom, provision, and timing. When we constantly desire what belongs to others, we place ourselves in danger of sin and spiritual decline.
Covetousness often produces envy, and envy can grow into bitterness, hatred, and other sinful actions. The Bible warns us that "where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work" (James 3:16). Instead of rejoicing with others for their blessings, a covetous heart becomes troubled and dissatisfied.
Secondly, coveting what belongs to others can lead to wrongful and unlawful actions. Inordinate ambition may tempt people to obtain wealth, possessions, status, or influence by dishonest means. God's command is clear:
Exodus 20:17 (KJV)
"Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's."
Many have fallen into fornication, adultery, theft, and even violence because they desired what God had given to someone else. The story of David and Bathsheba serves as a sober reminder of the destruction that can follow unchecked desire (2 Samuel 11).
God does not want His children to live in jealousy or discontentment. Rather, He wants us to trust Him wholeheartedly, knowing that He understands our needs better than we do. The Apostle Paul declared:
Philippians 4:11-12 (KJV)
"For I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content."
When we see good things in the lives of our neighbours, friends, or colleagues, we should not covet them. Instead, we should thank God for their blessings and diligently work with our own hands, trusting God to prosper our efforts.
Deuteronomy 28:12 (KJV)
"The LORD shall open unto thee his good treasure... and to bless all the work of thine hand."
God has promised never to abandon His children. As we walk in obedience and seek His will, we can confidently bring our requests before Him, knowing that He cares for us.
Matthew 6:33 (KJV)
"But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." From this passage we know that if we do God's will, there will be no need to have inordinate ambition because God will give us all things we need to have to serve him.
May God keep us from covetousness and give us grace to live for him in Jesus' name Amen.
