Title: Be in Control!
Proverbs 25:28 He that hath no rule (control) over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.
Devotion:
Life often throws us into situations where the winds of uncertainty and waves of chaos seem unrelenting. In such moments, the call to "be in control" is not about wielding power over every circumstance, but about anchoring ourselves in God's truth and His guidance. It is about surrendering control to the One who has ultimate authority, while stewarding the responsibilities we are entrusted with.
In Proverbs 25:28, we are reminded, "A person without self-control is like a city with broken-down walls." Self-control is not just a virtue but a safeguard for our hearts and minds. Without it, we are vulnerable to being swayed by emotions, temptations, and external pressures. The walls of self-control protect us, allowing us to navigate challenges with wisdom and grace.
The Bible also teaches us in 2 Timothy 1:7, "For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love, and self-discipline." To be in control does not mean we must rely solely on our own strength. God equips us with His Spirit, enabling us to exercise self-discipline and walk in love and power. Through His Spirit, we can respond rather than react, choosing obedience to His will over impulsiveness.
Take the story of Joseph as an example (Genesis 37-50). Despite facing betrayal, slavery, and imprisonment, Joseph remained steadfast. He exemplified control over his emotions and actions, trusting God’s purpose in every trial. His faith and self-control eventually led to him becoming a vessel of blessing and deliverance for many.
Being in control also means guarding our thoughts. As Philippians 4:8 urges us, "Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things." By fixing our minds on God’s truth and His promises, we can stay grounded and focused, even amidst life’s storms.
In practice, being in control calls for daily surrender to God. It requires us to seek Him in prayer and align our actions with His Word. It’s about taking each thought captive (2 Corinthians 10:5) and choosing paths of righteousness over fleeting desires.
Remember, control rooted in God’s wisdom is not about perfection, but about perseverance. It's the continuous decision to trust Him, even when circumstances feel overwhelming. When we anchor ourselves in His strength, we can walk in peace, knowing that His plans for us are good (Jeremiah 29:11).
Let today be a reminder that while we may not control every event around us, we are empowered to control our reactions, our choices, and our faithfulness to God. Be in control, and let God’s Spirit be your guide.
