Unemployment and underemployment in Nigeria
The story is not different from what happens in other countries, but Nigeria's case is compunded by 1) defficient educational system, while other countries emphasis technical education and pay them better we emphasis BK BK jerusalem ie social sciences, political science etc and employ them to supervise engineers, doctors etc. Those with HND are poorly rated in Nigeria so everyone wants a degree in engineering. A Nigerian trained B Sc.Eng cannot design ordinary plastic water pump to use in his house, cannot fix electrical fault in his house though he is BSc elect. Eng. An HND holder will simply fix all these.
2) Then there's a place of pride - how can I be a graduate and start farming? If you farm you'll do better than an illiterate.
3) Lack of govt assistance, I will say govt has very significant role to play in creating employment opportunities for citizen - cheap power supply, rural electrification, rural roads, encourage people in small group to get interest free loans to establish cottage industries eg food processing an example is if I plant plantain, a group can buy in large quantities from me and process to chips and export.
Govt can negotiate with other countries to hire Nigerians for 1-2 years or more for engineering jobs, technical, teaching and organized mining jobs. India was sending teachers to Nigeria in the 70s we can send to many other African and Carribean countries. About 2 million Indians work in Middle East and their govt negotiate what they are paid.
When we give contract to China or other countries govt has a duty to insist on number of Nigerian engineers, technologists, technicians, drivers and artisans - welders, iron benders etc that must work with them. They cannot bring some categories of workers from their countries.
Nigerian engineers must be assisted by govt to establish construction companies with very low interest rates. It's not possible to do anything in Nigeria with 25% interest rates unless you are an armed robber.
In summary govt has significant role to play, Nigerian youths have to study the right courses and have right attitude.
