Title: The Dignity of Labour!

1 Timothy 5:8  But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.

Devotion: Labour brings a sense of divinity and fulfillment to the worker. It is a gift to be able to work, earn a living, and provide for oneself and one's family. The Bible emphasizes the importance of labor and responsibility through Paul the Apostle, who sternly warns against neglecting one's household: _"If anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for his own household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever"_ (1 Timothy 5:8). This verse underscores the moral obligation of every individual to work diligently and care for their loved ones.

  God's promises shine upon those who commit their hands to labor. He assures us that He will bless the work of our hands (Deuteronomy 28:12). However, this blessing presupposes effort on our part; without work, there is nothing for God to multiply and bless. Even in ancient times, the Levites—the tribe dedicated to God's service—did not engage in farming or animal husbandry as their sustenance came from the offerings of the people (Numbers 18:21). Yet, for those outside the clergy, it remains essential to work and earn a living, safeguarding one's future, particularly in old age when physical strength wanes.

  Labour is honorable, regardless of the task. There is no "dirty job" because the reward—a hard-earned income—knows no shame or dishonor. As Proverbs 14:23 reminds us, _"In all toil there is profit, but mere talk tends only to poverty."_ Whether one possesses an advanced degree or not, embracing work—no matter how modest—is a wise and commendable choice. Temporary or petty jobs can sustain body and soul until better opportunities arise.

  Among all professions, farming stands as one of the most rewarding and blessed endeavors. A single grain of maize can yield hundreds of grains, showcasing God's power to multiply even the smallest efforts. Jesus Himself used agricultural metaphors to teach about growth and abundance, as seen in the Parable of the Sower (Matthew 13:3–8). The seed that falls on fertile soil brings forth a bountiful harvest, much like the farmer's diligent work in the field. For those without formal employment, small-scale farming is an excellent way to begin. It not only provides sustenance but also fosters a deep connection with the earth and God's creation.

  As we celebrate Labour Day, let us embrace the dignity of work and encourage others to cultivate a strong work ethic. Whether in farming, skilled professions, or temporary jobs, labor enriches our lives, glorifies God, and creates a foundation for sustainable livelihoods. Happy Labour Day!
