Title: Husband and Wife: Walking as One in God’s Design.
Scripture focus: Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God. Ephesians 5:21 KJV
Marriage, an institution created by God was never meant to be a competitive battleground or a transactional arrangement where two people simply share an address but a home of love, respect, peace, harmony and joy. In the mind of the Creator, marriage was designed to be a living, breathing picture of grace, unconditional devotion, and covenant unity.
When a Christian home aligns with God's prescription, it transforms into a quiet sanctuary of peace—a beacon of light standing resilient in a turbulent world.
God’s blueprint for a Christian family is not built on power, control, or rigid dominance, but on the enduring foundation of mutual honour, selfless sacrifice, and spiritual harmony.
Long before Scripture outlines specific roles within the home, it establishes a foundational command: partners must yield to one another out of reverence for Christ. "Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ." (Ephesians 5:21).
From this soil of mutual submission grows a healthy partnership.
Husbands are called to lead not with a heavy hand, but with a servant's heart—loving their wives with the same self-sacrificing dedication that Christ demonstrated when He gave Himself up for the church. Ephesians 5:25 — "Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her..."
In response, wives are invited to champion, respect, and partner with their husbands, cultivating an environment built on deep trust and quiet strength rather than constant friction. Ephesians 5:22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.
Living in harmony does not mean a couple will never face disagreement; rather, it means choosing covenant unity over the fleeting satisfaction of winning an argument. As the Apostle Paul reminded the believers in Colossians, that a godly home is sustained by patience and grace—bearing with one another and forgiving freely, just as the Lord forgave us. (Colossians 3:13) When offenses arise, harmony is preserved by keeping a short account of wrongs and letting kindness lead the conversation.
Counsel for Living in Harmony
Living in harmony doesn't mean you will never disagree; it means you choose unity over winning an argument. Here is how to keep God’s prescription active in your home:
- Pray Together Daily: It is hard to harbor bitterness toward someone you are actively holding hands with before God.
- Listen Before You Speak: Swap the urge to be right for the desire to understand. Kindness is a choice that pays daily dividends.
- Protect Your Sacred Space: Do not allow outside influences, unaddressed offense, or busyness to erode your intimacy. Treat your spouse as your closest ally, not your opponent.
Remember the truth of Ecclesiastes that a cord of three strands is not easily broken. Ecclesiastes 4:12 — "A cord of three strands is not quickly broken." When God remains the center strand, a marriage becomes an unshakable refuge—a dynamic testament to His enduring love.
Prayer: Lord, thank You for the sacred gift of marriage. Teach us how to love each other with patience, respect, and grace. Help us to forgive quickly, communicate kindly, and center our home on Your truth. May our marriage reflect Your love to the world around us. Amen.
