Title: Avoiding Arguments in Relationships — A Biblical Perspective.
Relationships are a gift from God, but they require wisdom and grace to flourish. The Bible offers timeless counsel on how to avoid arguments and maintain peace with those we love.
Choose Gentle Words
Proverbs 15:1 teaches: “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” Arguments often begin with words spoken in haste. A gentle response, even when provoked, can calm tension and prevent quarrels.
Philippians 2:3–4 says: “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.” Pride fuels conflict, but humility disarms it. When we put our partner’s needs before our own, arguments lose their power.
Colossians 3:13 reminds us: “Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.” Holding grudges breeds resentment. Forgiveness clears the path for reconciliation and peace.
Biblical Examples of Peacekeeping
- Abraham and Lot (Genesis 13:8–9): When strife arose between their herdsmen, Abraham avoided argument by offering Lot the choice of land. His willingness to yield preserved their relationship.
- Jesus and His Disciples (Mark 9:33–35): When the disciples argued about who was greatest, Jesus taught them that true greatness lies in humility and service. He redirected their focus from rivalry to love.
Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians 13:4–5 are a blueprint for avoiding arguments: “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.” Love is not about winning debates but about nurturing peace.
Avoiding arguments is not about suppressing differences but about responding in Christlike love. When couples embrace gentleness, humility, forgiveness, and patience, they reflect God’s design for relationships — a union marked by peace and grace.
