Title: Loss!
Scripture focus: “it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment” (Hebrews 9:27) KJV.
Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.James 4:14 KJV.
Devotion: Loss is one of the most certain realities of life. Every human being, no matter how powerful, wealthy, or influential, will one day face the ultimate loss — death. Scripture reminds us that “it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment” (Hebrews 9:27). This truth is sobering, yet it is meant to awaken us to prepare for eternity.
The Reality of Loss
- Earthly possessions: No matter how much we accumulate, we cannot take them beyond the grave. Jesus asked, “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” (Mark 8:36).
- Human life: James describes life as “a vapor, that appears for a little time, and then vanishes away” (James 4:14). Loss is inevitable because our earthly existence is temporary.
The Hope Beyond Loss
- Christ’s victory: Though death is certain, Jesus conquered it. He declared, “I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live” (John 11:25).
- Eternal life: Those who accept Christ as Lord and Savior will not face eternal loss, but eternal gain. Paul assures us, “For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain” (Philippians 1:21).
Call to Preparation
Loss reminds us that life is fragile and fleeting. The ultimate question is not whether we will die, but whether we are prepared for what comes after. Jesus said, “In my Father’s house are many mansions… I go to prepare a place for you” (John 14:2). That place is reserved for those who have surrendered to Him.
Reflection
- Have you placed your trust in Christ, the only One who gives victory over loss?
- Are you living with eternity in view, knowing that earthly things will fade?
The devotion on Loss! is not meant to leave us in despair, but to remind us of the urgency of salvation. Accept Christ today (2 Corinthians 6:2), and what seems like loss will become eternal gain.
This is written in memory of a departed close friend to serve as a warning that Death can come anytime but our motto must be:"BE PREPARED."
