Scripture focus: "He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD; and that which he hath given will he pay him again."  Proverbs 19:17 KJV 

Devotion: To serve God faithfully often means confronting the reality of poverty—whether in our own lives or in the lives of those around us. Scripture reminds us that poverty is not a curse but an opportunity to experience God’s provision, humility, and compassion.
God’s Heart for the Poor
The Bible consistently reveals God’s concern for the poor. In Proverbs 19:17, it says: “Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward them for what they have done.” Serving God is inseparable from serving those in need. When we extend our hands to the poor, we are extending them to God Himself.
  Jesus embodied this truth. He was born in a manger, lived without wealth, and declared in Matthew 8:20: “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.” His life shows us that poverty does not hinder divine purpose—it magnifies dependence on God.
Stories of Faith in Poverty
- Widow of Zarephath (1 Kings 17:8–16): With only a handful of flour and a little oil, she chose to serve God’s prophet Elijah. Her obedience in poverty unlocked God’s miraculous provision.
- The Widow’s Offering (Mark 12:41–44): Jesus praised a poor widow who gave two small coins, declaring her gift greater than the rich because she gave out of her poverty.
- Paul’s Testimony (Philippians 4:12–13): Paul wrote, “I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty… I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” Poverty became a classroom where Paul learned contentment and reliance on Christ.
Serving God in poverty means:
- Trusting His provision: Believing He will supply all our needs (Philippians 4:19).
- Living with humility: Recognizing that our worth is not in possessions but in Christ.
- Showing compassion: Sharing what little we have, knowing God multiplies it.
- Finding strength in weakness: Allowing God’s power to be perfected in our lack (2 Corinthians 12:9).
Reflection
Serving God and poverty is not about glorifying lack, but about glorifying God in every circumstance. Poverty strips away illusions of self-sufficiency and teaches us to lean fully on Him. It also opens our eyes to the suffering of others, compelling us to act with love and generosity.
