Title: When last did you help the poor?
James 1:27 KJV
Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.
Devotion: I observed among Christians in my locality that once they attend church services they are less concerned about the less privileged in the society. But that is not enough, in addition to church attendance and Bible reading there's need for kindness, mercy, love and giving.
In our neighborhood there are thousands of people who cannot eat one good meal a day. We often overlook this fact under the pretence that what we have is not enough for our need so we can't share with others.
When we buy from the poor street vendor we often under price, while in the shopping mall we buy and give tips to those who do not need it. We often sneer at beggers and ask them to go and work even as able bodied persons cannot find job. In our schools are indigent brilliant students who deserve to be given scholarship and we care less.
I urge you and me this morning to begin to look into these areas of life and start helping the poor and needy in our community. We can assist the old lady to clean her house, buy groceries, take her clothes to laundry etc.
Spending just 30 minutes a week with a lonely elderly woman or man can have a profound impact on their life. Your companionship can help prolong their life and bring joy and connection to their days. Small moments, big impact!
