Title: A Prayer for Your Nation
Text: "And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned certain days, and fasted, and prayed before the God of heaven." (Nehemiah 1:4)
When Nehemiah received the disturbing news about Jerusalem, he did not respond with indifference. The city of his fathers lay in ruins, its walls broken down and its gates consumed by fire. Though he lived in comfort and held a prestigious position in the king's palace, his heart remained connected to the welfare of his nation. The burden of Jerusalem became his burden. He sat down, wept, mourned, fasted, and prayed before God.
Nehemiah teaches us a profound lesson about national responsibility. Before he rebuilt walls with his hands, he first carried the burden in his heart. Before he stood before the king, he knelt before God. Before he asked others to work, he wept for the condition of his people.
Today, Nigeria faces many challenges. Economic hardship weighs heavily upon families. Rising costs of living have stretched many beyond their limits. Insecurity threatens lives and property in different parts of the nation. Corruption, injustice, unemployment, social division, and moral decline continue to weaken the foundations of society. It is easy to complain, criticise leaders, blame institutions, or lose hope altogether. Yet the example of Nehemiah calls God's people to a different response.
The first response to a nation's troubles should be a broken and burdened heart. Sadly, many have become accustomed to bad news. We hear of violence, suffering, corruption, and hardship, yet our hearts are no longer moved. Nehemiah refused to be indifferent. He allowed the condition of his nation to affect him deeply. A nation will not change until its people care enough to seek God's face for its restoration.
Nehemiah did more than mourn. He prayed. He understood that the God who rules heaven also rules over the affairs of nations. Prayer is not a sign of helplessness; it is an expression of faith in the power of God. Nigeria does not merely need better policies, stronger institutions, or improved infrastructure, though all these are important. Nigeria needs divine intervention. Believers must pray for wisdom for leaders, peace in communities, justice in the land, economic recovery, and spiritual awakening among the people.
However, Nehemiah's story did not end with prayer. After praying, he acted. He approached the king, requested permission, secured resources, travelled to Jerusalem, organised the people, and began rebuilding. He became part of the solution. Genuine prayer will always produce responsible action.
Nigeria needs men and women who will not only pray but also build. We build Nigeria when we refuse to engage in corruption. We build Nigeria when we work diligently and honestly. We build Nigeria when we raise children with godly values. We build Nigeria when we encourage peace instead of hatred, unity instead of division, and integrity instead of deception. We build Nigeria when we serve faithfully in our communities and use our gifts for the common good.
Like Nehemiah, we may also face opposition. Sanballat, Tobiah, and Geshem mocked and resisted the rebuilding work. Every effort to bring positive change attracts resistance. Yet Nehemiah remained focused because he knew God had called him to the task. Nigerians who desire a better nation must not surrender to discouragement, cynicism, or fear. The work of rebuilding may be difficult, but with God's help it is possible.
The future of Nigeria will not be secured merely by those who complain about her problems. It will be shaped by those who pray for her, love her, and labour for her restoration. God is still looking for modern-day Nehemiahs who will carry the burden of the nation on their hearts and commit themselves to rebuilding what has been broken.
May we not be spectators in the story of our nation. May we become intercessors, builders, and agents of transformation. Let us pray for Nigeria. Let us serve Nigeria. Let us build Nigeria.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, we bring Nigeria before You. Forgive our sins and heal our land. Grant wisdom and integrity to our leaders. Bring peace where there is violence, hope where there is despair, and prosperity where there is lack. Raise men and women who will stand for righteousness and truth. Help us not only to pray for Nigeria but also to contribute positively to her growth and restoration. Like Nehemiah, give us burdened hearts, steadfast faith, and willing hands to build. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Main Lesson
A great nation is rebuilt when God's people move from complaint to compassion, from compassion to prayer, and from prayer to purposeful action.
